ZOOKEEPER–The Movie–Pseudo-Review

I toured Boston’s Franklin Park Zoo during the making of Adam Sandler’s feature film Zookeeper. I was really there to see two gorillas–Okpara and fugitive gorilla, Little Joe. I had the privilege to care for them as a relief animal keeper when they were youngsters at another zoo. And did they do some growing!

Remember that we are keepers of the animals. We are not keepers of the zoo. This distinction is of critical significance to some. At least it was to one of my former supervisors. ‘Animal Keeper’ or ‘Zoo Keeper’ — the vocation does have a negative connotation in some countries and even in some circles in the lower 48. In Alaska we are treated like gods. Kidding…

My parents certainly thought zoo keeping was cool, but a few of their friends suffered from severe intellectual snobbery. The truth is that many animal keepers have Master’s degrees and I know at least one with a Ph.D. Several others are Ph.D. students or candidates.

I personally found that it was easier to get into veterinary school than it was to acquire a position as a full-time animal keeper. And I respect the Ph.D. programs, but those too, were easier to get into than it was to find a keeper job. You might not get rich keeping the kingdom, but you’ll love what you do.

Meet Rosario Dawson. Yes, you know her, but maybe you didn't know that she grew up in a squat in the lower east side, and she was discovered on her front porch by Kids director Larry Clark. Now she is one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood. Cinderella, anyone?

She's killed dramatic roles in Sin City and Seven Pounds, but her latest film, Zookeeper, is her first foray into comedy. Well, technically Clerks II was her first comedy, but we're going to count a film that discusses "ass to mouth" as a different type of humor.

We sat down with Dawson one-on-one, (which seemed more like coffee with our BFF) and talked about her 16 years in the business, swinging like a girl, family ties, and David Bowie.

New Times: We know you have done Clerks II, but other than that, this is your first comedy, right?

Rosario Dawson: That was a very genre-specific comedy. For most people, this will be my first comedy. Zookeeper is such a different type of humor. I loved that. I do a lot of dramatic, hardcore, and intense stuff. It's difficult and I usually just need to put my walls up and disappear for a little bit. But for this one, my cousins, my brother and my dad all came to visit. I was able to have a ton of guests come and meet all the animals.

KEVIN JAMES At The St. Louis Red Carpet Premiere of THE ZOOKEEPER

Donkeys, llamas, eagles, and snakes were at the St. Louis Zoo yesterday to greet actor Kevin James, along with several hundred human fans of the PAUL BLART MALL COP star. They lined the red carpet on a hot Wednesday morning to catch a glimpse of the actor who was in town for the premier of his new comedy ZOOKEEPER which was screened inside the Zoo’s Living World Center at 10am. This is the first time our city’s Zoo has hosted a movie premiere and it went well. Additional animals in attendance included several St. Louis Blues hockey players, Adam Wainwright and Jack Clark from the baseball Cardinals, The Loop’s Joe Edwards, some guy from The Bachelorette, and Channel 2’s Tim Ezell in a gorilla suit. Kevin James arrived on the Zoo train and graciously signed autographs and mingled with fans. I didn’t see him talk to any animals like he does in the movie, but he seemed like a friendly, approachable guy and seemed to be having a good time. He spoke briefly before the film and claims he chose the St. Louis Zoo for the premiere because it’s the “best free zoo in the country”. I wonder how he knows that. Congrats to the gang at Allied Advertising for pulling off this fun event. ZOOKEEPER, which co-stars Rosario Dawson (unfortunately not at the Zoo yesterday) opens next Friday, July 8th.
